LITR 2130 Contemporary Memoir

A detailed study of the contemporary memoir by reading representative works in English with particular focus on the origins and development of New Autobiography. Prerequisite: COMP 1500 or COMP 1500H. Frequency: Every Fall.

Women

HONR 1010B The Healthy Woman

What defines a healthy woman? This course provides students with an opportunity to explore this question from a humanities perspective. Course goals are to analyze the ways women’s health has been imagined and expressed in literary and cultural texts. Materials will emphasize how the myths, attitudes, and beliefs surrounding women’s health have evolved since the advent of modern medicine in 1800s America and Britain. Prerequisite: Honors students only. Frequency: Even Year Fall. Register here.

As one of the final projects in this class, students are asked to compose creative artifacts that apply course concepts and theories to communicate what it means to be Woman. The below is their collective story.

HONR 2000W Pathography: Patients' Stories of Illness

Description
This course explores the experience of illness through patient narratives in fiction, biographies and autobiographies. These narratives, in turn, shed light on contemporary medical practice. The course will examine such themes as battle, journey, and rebirth in patients' narratives. Satisfies general education requirements in Arts and Humanities. Prerequisite: Honors students only. Frequency: Even Year Winter.

Style Us: Writing and Professionalization Workshops

Style Us is a series hosted by the Department of Humanities and Politics (DHP) that focuses on preparing humanities students and enthusiasts from across the university with the strong creative, communication, and etiquette skills necessary to navigate and challenge the writing and professional conventions of their fields. Wyrd: NSU's Student Book Club

Wyrd is an official student organization that seeks to unite individuals with a common interest in reading and literature. They work to foster a love of reading, literature, and discussion; provide an outlet for creativity and critical thinking; and use literature as a way to learn more about current and past societal issues. Digressions: NSU's Literary & Art Journal

Digressions Literary & Art Journal is a student-run literary journal sponsored by the Department of Communication, Media, and Arts in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to submit original works of poetry, short fiction, creative essays, dramatic scenes, artwork, and photography for consideration in the journal, which is published yearly in the winter semester.

The Reel: NSU's Annual Film Series

The Reel is a series hosted by the Department of Humanities and Politics that offers NSU students, faculty, and other members of the university and local community curated film screenings three times per Fall and Winter semester.
