PHILOSOPHY

Dr. Ben Mulvey, Associate Professor

  1. In your experience, what is the purpose of a conference? I don’t believe there is a single purpose to all conferences.  Different conferences, different purposes.  At “prestigious” conferences, too many big egos want to show people how important they are.  At more specialized conferences real collegiality and learning can take place.

  2. In your field, is it typical to deliver Poster Presentations or Oral Presentations? Oral presentations are the norm.  Poster presentations are rare.

    1. In your field, do panelists typically read papers or speak without notes? Both really.  More often people read.  Some conferences I’ve attended specifically asked presenters NOT to read.

  3. In your experience, what is the responsibility of an audience member? To actually listen and engage with what is being presented.  Otherwise, don’t attend.

  4. How would you describe your presentation persona? (or What is an effective presentation persona?) My “persona” has evolved.  These days I try to be as casual and as conversational as possible.  As for an effective persona, I believe that depends on the strengths and personality of the presenter.  Different strokes....

  5. How do you handle performance anxiety? I try to use nervousness as a positive challenge, an opportunity for growth and development.

  6. How do you 'network'? I say ‘Hello’.

  7. Any tips you normally give to first-time goers? Be your authentic self.  Do not affect a persona.
