Friends, Family, & Crowds
When asked what the most memorable part of the theater is, many responded with stories about connecting with others. Below are excerpts from their stories.
What's your favorite part about going to the theater?
“My most memorable theater experience was when I went to see Twilight with my mom. […] And then all my other memorable experiences at the theater have always been with my mom, because we continue to see all the Twilight movies at the movie theater.” ~ Anaya Avila

“Since I did not grow up here—I did not really like grow up with like theaters and stuff like that—but when I did come here, it was like very much something new to me, and I was like, oh, well, that's cool! And like the people that made it memorable to me, was like the people around me, and like the people around the theater just like being excited and stuff like that with their family and enjoying the movie. That was really fun to watch. My favorite part would definitely … my favorite part about the theater would definitely be the big screen and the audio ‘cause I feel like I just love the environment.” ~ Chloe

“My favorite part about going to the theater is how much it connects people. If you don't know what to do, you can always go to the theater and watch a movie. I grew up in a decently small town in Maryland, so there was never really much to do. It was cool to go to the movies. Some of my friends even had their birthday parties there. The movies are so comforting and reliable for me. They were always there, and new movies are constantly coming out. I have a friend I almost never see, especially now that I've moved to another state for college. But every time a new Marvel movie comes out, we make sure to go see it in the theater together, and it's become a tradition for us, and we’ve maintained it for almost two years. If it were not for these small movie dates, I would never spend time with her, and I really value this time we get to spend together.” ~ Anon 2

“Depending on the type of movie, you can get dozens if not hundreds of other people at the same time that can add to that experience. So, for example, a comedy may be funnier when all the people around you are also laughing at same time.” ~ Ned

“As humans, we tend to be social beings. We have an inherent need to gather and be together in order to be a part of the world around us. There are many ways humans engage in these social activities. Going to the movie theaters is one of them. It is a social experiment that opens up many facets of defining and attaining human needs.” ~ Samanthaka Nandam

“I think it's such a good way to get out and, like, go out with your friends and have fun. I've never really had a bad movie experience. I've always loved going to the movies, especially before COVID. I was always going. And then when they opened up again I was so excited. In my town there's a little theater, and it's only five dollars for tickets for, like adults and stuff, so it's super cheap, and it's a super good way to like, get out of the house and like see a new movie.” ~ Darla

“In terms of my favorite aspect of going to the movies. I really like the social aspect of going to the movies because I enjoy just talking to my friends before the movies. Sometimes, you know, asking them, oh, have you seen the trailers? Are you excited to see this movie? And then gauging their reactions during the movie. It's always nice to see, just to share moments in the theater with them. […] I know you're not supposed to talk during the movies, but I do like to comment on my excitement, or if there is something scary, it's very entertaining to see your friends screaming their heads off in the movies. And of course, […] going to a movie theater in-person with your friends is very fun, especially after the movie, because you can immediately ask them their reactions and just talk about the movie after.” ~ Zachary Lawrence

“My favorite part about going to the theater is most of the people that I'm going with. But I just like the atmosphere of the theater. How it's dark, and it's just a big, bright screen, and there's nothing else to do but enjoy the masterpiece that is playing in front of you. I love that part! I love getting the snacks and just being able to be quiet, but still spend time with people that I love and just enjoy that theater experience. It's very wholesome” ~ Lyss

“I love going to premieres because there's a crowd full of people getting ready to watch the movie that they've been anticipating. And the crowd reactions just make them even better.” ~ Dan McCloud
