“The most frightening experience in the theater for me was I would say the movie Smile which was a few weeks ago. No, yeah, a few weeks ago. And that movie was super terrifying for me. Personally, I don't do well with horror movies, maybe due to my first experience as a young kid to Jaws! And the whole crowd was also pretty scared of the movie.” ~ Uri

“My most frightening experience at the movie theater was … watching any kind of horror movies, honestly! One that I can think of is The Nun, because I'm very scared of jump scares. The type of movie that I enjoy watching if it's horror is […] psychological, because I feel like […] I can think more about it. It's kind of like a book. But when you have jump scares, you're like, oh, my gosh! Like I did not expect that coming. I'm not sure if there are any jump scares in Jaws, but I'm very excited to watch so hopefully we all enjoy and have a great time.” ~ Afia Mushfika

“I'm not really a scary type of person. So most of my movie theater experiences are not very frightening. However, I do remember going to see one of the Conjuring movies with my sister and my friends! This movie was so terrifying for me since I was pretty young when I watched it. What made the movie the most terrifying for me was the fact that it was based on a true story. And no matter how many years passed, I'll never forget that movie, and how scared I was watching it.” ~ Anon 2

“My most frightening experience that I ever had in theaters was probably watching the Happy Death Day movies. I really loved those movies, but it's not a scary movie in so much of itself. But it is … it has a lot of jump scares […] especially when you're in a theatre, and you're immersed in the sound and in the atmosphere and the suspense and surrounded by so many people who are also deep in that suspense with you.” ~ Anon 3

“I went to see The Conjuring 3 when it came out, and that movie had scarred me for life. I went with my sister, and I just remember being so scared with her, going home, and like looking under my bed like making sure there was no witchcraft, because that's what there was in the movie. And it was just like a super super scary movie. But I still loved it. I love scary movies.” ~ Darla

“I went to go watch a movie called The Northman, and I went with my family, and we definitely misunderstood what the movie is going to be about, because that scared me so much. Oh, my gosh! I had to walk out a few times. It wasn't even that intense. But there were just a lot a lot of jump scares, and, I wouldn't really say some gory scenes, but some are a little, yeah, more on the gory side. But it was such a scary experience, and it was […] a random day of the week, random time. So the theater was empty, and it was just my family, and I—like my mom, my sister, and a couple a few rows behind us. So the theater was huge, dark, and the movie theater itself, like the building as a whole, was empty because of the time of day. So even walking out was just ominous.” ~ Lyss

“I don't really like scary movies, and I'm terrified of clowns, but [It] would probably be my most frightening experience.” ~ Emily Troy

“[Smile] was a really scary movie. I don't really get scared at movies. But like there was certain scenes in that movie that were pretty scary, but overall I enjoyed it.” ~ Nick Stabile

“I do have one memory where, you know, my mom took us as kids into the city to see 101 Dalmatians, and it was all sold out. So! We ended up going to see Funny Girl with Barbara Streisand, and I have no memory of that film, other than the fact that I was really disappointed to have to go see it, because, you know, obviously as a kid, I was looking forward to seeing 101 Dalmatians! So, that actually might be my scariest experience in the cinema.” ~ David Kilroy
Horrifying Experiences
“It was Jordan Peele's Nope […] what basically happened was it was halfway through the movie […] And there is this guy in the right side in the center of the row. […] This guy, I have no idea who he was, would come in and out of the movie theater every five minutes during the middle of the movie […] The guy just kept walking in and out. He was texting people. He kept going out and in, I didn’t know if it was to the bathroom, to call somebody, but something was going on, and I was terrified because, unfortunately, especially during 2022, there has been more shootings going on. And I was afraid because I was like thinking, is this guy a shooter?” ~ Katherine

“One of the most frightening things at a theater is definitely when the usher comes to your group or to you individually and says, ‘I'm sorry, I'm gonna have to kick you out,’ and that almost happened to me, my brother, and my sister. […] My brother decided to bring out his laser pointer in the movie theater and started playing with the blank screen, because there was hardly no one in there until the two ladies and their children walked in and said, ‘Hey, cut it out!’ And my brother was still being silly. I was ducking on the floor, so they won’t see me. […] and in my head I was thinking, oh, I'm gonna get kicked out! We're going to be kicked out! We're going to be kicked out! We're going to be kicked out!” ~ Dan McCloud
